Spitfire Travel  to Boulder,  CO

The U16 girls Sacramento Spitfire traveled to Boulder, Colorado to attend the Rocky Mountain Cup College Showcase on June 16 - 18. Teams from across the US competed at this beautiful location.

Spitfire got off to a rocky start - thanks to altitude and delayed planes due to weather. Their first game of the event against the Pueblo Rangers Twisters was interrupted just after the start of the second half by the blast of the evacuation horn due to a lightning and thunder shower that briefly passed over the fields --- this stuff does not happen in Sacto! They called the game over after 30 minutes of everyone hiding in their cars
in the parking lot. Score 0-0.

Spitfire rallied in the second game of the day against the Boulder County Force Red - with ending score 1-0 and tremendous saves by their goalie Chelsea Wager-Smith and the determination of Maddy McEvilly in the mid.

Saturdays game brought better weather and excellent play by the Spitfire. Spitfire beat the Fort Collins Arsenal White 2 - 0; and the second game of the day left the Spitfire with a winning score of 9 - 0 against Fort Worth United, sending them to the Semi-Final. Both the offense and the defense played wonderfully and the passing was great.

Semi-Final game against Dallas on Sunday found the Spitfire tired - with several players experiencing symptoms from the altitude change. Along with weird weather conditions that left several easy-ups and spectators to tumble like tumbleweeds down the field, Spitfire played a lack-luster first half with Dallas ending with 1 point lead due to a foul in the box.

But in the second half, the Spitfire came alive and played perhaps their most exciting half of their season. Spectators from both sides were impressed by aggressive play from the heart in that half.

With the charge called by Coach Karen on a corner kick by Texas for all Spitfire to go to the goal -- goalie Chelsea streaked all the way down the field to throw herself at the opponents goalie in attempt to head the ball in -- spectacular playing that will leave Colorado talking about the Spitfire for years to come!!!

The team gave it their all, but the final outcome was 0 - 1 in favor of Texas. After a wonderful tour of the University of Colorado - Spitfire flew back in Sacramento to rest up for more great soccer!
