Sac United U-14B America
Cal Cup Champions
As the only Sac United team entered in the California Cup tournament
this weekend, the U-14B America team did the club proud and captured
the championship in a penalty kick shootout against tournament hosts
and defending tournament champions San Juan Lightning Sunday June
22nd. Fittingly, Goalkeeper Francisco "Bubba" Reyes kicked the game
winning PK after the teams played to a thrilling 2-2 tie after
regulation and two 5 minute overtimes. America was down a goal with
less than a minute to go when Ryan Nevis buried a shot into the
right corner after a brilliant cross from Daniel Castillo to tie the
score just before the final whistle blew.
The tournament title was the culmination of a great weekend by all
the America boys who were cheered on by Rob Belme out with an
injury. The team came out on top against the Santa Rosa Heat and
Diablo FC by identical 5-0 scores. Goal scorers included Brian
Grove, Luis Acosta, Castulo Carvajal, Gustavo Leon and Freddie
Hunter. A 2-2 draw against the Davis Legacy thrust them into the
semi-final Saturday night against a tough Manteca squad. A brilliant
header from America`s Deondre Hamblin off a corner kick was the only
goal of the match and sent the boys into the tournament final.
