FIVE TIME CHAMPIONS
SPITFIRE DOMINATE EL DORADO
MEMORIAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT
FOR A FIFTH CHAMPIONSHIP
For a 5th time, the Sacramento United Spitfire are the El Dorado
Memorial soccer tournament champions. The Spitfire have won the
event every year they have entered beginning in 2002 as a U-12 team
and then again in 2003. Now a three year span from 2005 to this
years tournament. The U-17 girls went undefeated this year, in the
annual event, held at the Cherry Island Soccer complex August 28-29,
2007.
The leading scorer for the Spitfire was Ashley Purkins who notched
her second hat trick of the year. Cassie Rodriguez scored twice over
the three game tournament. Camile Cholger, Vicki Ramirez, Aubrey
Mapes and Maddison McEvilly each found the net while Aneka McKean,
Nydia Ramos, and Thea Cunningham added assists. Jessica Raskin,
Janine Morrison and Rachel Uda secured the midfield providing
constant offensive pressure. Defenders Alex Ramirez, Alex Highsmith,
Caitlin Crooks, Micaela Newman and Erica Havey put up a strong
defense in front of guest keeper Melinda Dyke who allowed only two
goals.
The final game was marred by controversy as a scheduling change
caused the Cal Northstars to forfeit the finals rather than face the
unbeaten Spitfire late in the day.
Next up for the Spitfire, the CYSA playing league. League play for
the Spitfire begins Saturday September 8th in Napa.
