Spitfire Win Irvine Harvest Cup Thanksgiving Weekend

While most of us were gorging ourselves on Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, the Sacramento United U-16 girls soccer team was feasting on Southern California soccer teams. The Spitfire dominated the Irvine Harvest Cup held at U.C. Irvine over the Thanksgiving weekend, shutting out every opponent they faced. The Sac United Spitfire went 5-0 over the three day event which featured many of the best teams in Southern California and the Western States. The Spitfire posted victories of 3-0, 2-0, 5-0, 4-0 and 3-0 against Oxnard in the finals.

The Opportunity
The Sacramento United Spitfire, a successful competitive girl’s
soccer team, are holding tryouts for the 2006-2007 season (May
2006 through April 2007).

The Team and it’s Achievements
The Spitfire is finishing an ambitious season and have been
Champions at many of the tournaments they have competed in:

  • Santa Barbara – Finalist
  • 05 State Cup - Quarter finalist
  • Santa Rosa College Classic – Finalist
  • US Club Regionals Tournament – Boise ID
  • California Cup - Quarter finalist

The Spitfire have also been Quarter finalist at State Cup in 2004 and 2005.

The Spitfire have been together since 2001, with 7 of it’s original players at it’s core. The 2005-06 Spitfire is an eclectic, diverse group with members from 8 different high schools and residing in communities in Sacramento, Land Park, River Park, Elk Grove, Laguna, Granite Bay, West Sacramento and Rancho Murieta. Six of our players are District ODP players - with two advancing to the State ODP pool, and one member who is a Regional ODP
player. The players who participate at the High School level all play on their Varsity teams.

The Spitfire team is a close team, participating in many team building activities. We have an annual team building Camping Trip in the summer as well as activities like glow bowling and team/family dinners to keep the level of team work going. Spitfire also had the privileged of representing the US in the Friendship Games in Sydney, Australia in 2004 - with hopes of
scheduling another ‘big trip’ before our players go off to college.

The focus of the 2006-2007 Spitfire is to expose its players to the next level of play – college. In order to achieve this lofty goal, the Spitfire will pursue a multifaceted program:

  • Training: Team training weekly, Positional trainings, Club training
      Team camps, Hoek soccer camp.
  • College showcase tournaments (see Proposed Tournaments Below).
Matches with the top teams in CA and other western states.
  • College nights and individual college counseling.
  • Guidance and training from the highly qualified coaches from
the Sacramento United Club. (Highly licensed, experience in
coaching and playing, relationships with coaches throughout
    the country)
  • Above all, have an enjoyable experience.

Coach Karen Hanks coaching the team this year, along with clubwide training by our core Sac United coaches, headed by Shawn Blakeman, Technical Director for Sacramento United.  Details of their credentials are included in this brochure.  Sacramento United Soccer club represents soccer at the highest possible level.
